“Dissolving”

38X50” Charcoal, Collage (Rice Paper, Stonehenge, and Bristol Cut-Outs) on Stonehenge Paper

The assignment was to do a self-portrait using any medium we wanted as long as it fit the required size of at least 36X45.” I don’t really know why, but whenever I draw self-portraits, I tend to make them extremely dark and not the stereotypical happy portrait. It probably is that even though I am a generally happy person, there is still a dark side within me. For this assignment, I wanted to find a balance between the collage and the drawing. The medium I chose was charcoal (tonal) because it is such great medium to exaggerate lighting. As for the collage, I cut out different sized squares of rice paper, bristol, and stonehenge. It was very tedious in terms of where to place these squares because I had to think of hierarchy and whether the placement worked well with the overall composition. This piece was inspired by my fear of losing myself as years pass by. Each dissolving square represents a fragment of my genuine self and gradually they leave my body one by one, until my entire body is completely dissolved
